The Delight
Oh how I was drawn into this series with just a few hours of listening to the audiobook. Kylie Scott created very interesting characters with level heads even if the heroine was extremely young. Things heat up and feel exciting with some time for the hero to write tons of songs about his love.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, right? Unless on your twenty-first birthday you get drunk and married to rocks biggest bad boy and guitarist from Stage Dive. Having no memory of the important stuff, Evelyn Thomas makes quite the impression on her husband the morning after by throwing up at the news of their nuptials. Needless this to say, this doesn’t sit well with either of them.
Evelyn has no memories of the night before. How they met, how they partied or even how they got married. Flat out drunk, and oh, how did the name David get tattooed on her ass? Now David’s a pretty sexy guy, who remembers everything is quite offended with how Evelyn takes it even if she does have a hangover. They part ways rather abruptly with the promise of a quick divorce…or so they think. Let’s not forget that Ev is into country music as well. *yuck*
Well, when the media gets wind of this it all goes south pretty fast. David brings her out to him and then sics all the lawyers and managers on her without really talking. And that is when I wanted to smash David upside the head. They get drunk and married. He obviously wasn’t as drunk and has instantly fallen in love with Ev. But when she throws up after finding out what happened, he turns into a complete dick about it all.
Escaping the media they hide out in a home in Monterey, David and Ev try to make a go of it. Getting to know each other, having awesome rock star sex, yeah, maybe rock star sex is different, but who cares, it’s awesome. But jealousy raises its ugly head as David has dealt with a cheating girlfriend in the past and starts to accuse Ev of some things. I hate to say it, but it all comes back to communication people. Good ole David has the best way of communicating though:
Ev being twenty-one has some more growing to do like choosing to finish college in a degree her father picked. Learning to live in a rock star world. And being adult enough to decide what is best for herself despite the men in her life telling her what to do. These two may have a instant love kind of vibe, but they deal with stuff all relationships have and I like how Ev handles the shit thrown at her.
David also has to deal with his own stuff. I loved this man so much, but then he did somethings that he knew were wrong. He had to find a way to fix them and live with who he was becoming. He’s writing songs again and some are messy like his feelings and some are heartbreaking. Through it all we see him realize his own faults and get back to why he fell for Ev. Doing everything he can to get her back, he creates a man I could respect and approve for Ev.
The other members of Stage Dive all make appearances, but the one we learn the most about is drummer and best friend of Davids, Mal (Malcom), who comes off as extremely strange, immature and pyscho…oh, and he falls in the second book. Jimmy the lead vocalist and also David’s brother. He is a piece of work and I will have more on him in his book. Finally there is Ben the bassist who gets the last book. Ben’s kind of quiet, and kind of a man whore who loves to rock out. He gets the last book in the series.
Ev’s parents are kind of sucky, David’s mom harassing Jimmy and Ev’s brother overcoming the disappointment Ev has found in him. In fact the Ev’s BFF (totally hilarious as the ultimate Stage Dive fan) falls for Ev’s brother making for some funny noise in the other room sex.
The narrator, Andi Arndt, does a graceful job of narrating the story, both female and male. Normally, the female narrators get their voices all gravelly and it feels fake. Andi just lowered her voice some and while it wasn’t convincing as a male voice, it wasn’t distracting either. Good inflections and making be believe these characters were talking to me. I would love to hear more from her.
Lick is a sexy and lickable start to a new series about bad boy rockers and the women who tame them. How many licks does it take to get to the center of David? Well, I don’t know, but I think Ev’s up to the challenge!
