The Delight
An interesting plot of someone selling military secrets and they send in the most unlikely person to find out who: an injured soldier to a recovery facility. The premise was interesting as the hero is deaf and has limited use of his right arm. Eco-therapy seems to be a thing and we find out what it means to heal when you don’t want to heal.
Review
When I started this story, there were a couple of story threads that seemed to go together and then it seemed to go every which way. Cole Makani Hunter, former Navy SEAL, returns home from a disastrous mission without his hearing, use of his right arm and his best friend. When he asked to uncover a traitor, he feels useful again even if he has to infiltrate a rehab center for vets. Eco-therapy is up first and he’s ready to turn tail and get away from this hippy dippidy woman communing with nature.
Annie Murray is a ecotherapist who rescues all kinds of animals and communes with nature. A bad relationship has driven her back to her hometown where her grandfather hasn’t exactly been welcoming and her cousin is trying to make a name for herself in flipping houses. Annie works part time in ecotherapy while saving for her dream to open an animal sanctuary.
Cole and Annie clash from first meeting to second meeting where they don’t exactly get along. Cole is one scary dude, but at every turn he turns out to be the gruff good guy. While Cole is deaf, Annie made sure he could read lips and talked to him when he could see her lips. I would have really liked to have seen more sign language being used as I had deaf grandparents while I was a kid and that’s how they communicated as well as reading lips.
The suspense is all over the place. Someone is stalking Annie. Someone is selling military secrets. Someone kills off a character I was beginning to adore. And when it all finally culminates to the climax, I felt very unsatisfied. It fell flat as I don’t feel the author built up the suspense enough for me to feel truly terrified and you could figure out who it was extremely easily.
So while I was reading this for I Dare You week, I ended up keeping it out of the mix. It just wasn’t that thrilling nor suspenseful.
